ProneticsHK

Published listing: Voice-Based English Pronunciation Practice

ProneticsHK is a voice-recognition pronunciation game for Cantonese learners, offering staged practice, visual guidance and real-time feedback for difficult English consonant sounds in school-age practice.

Demo walkthrough

ProneticsHK focuses on English pronunciation contrasts that can be difficult for Cantonese learners, including the th sound and voiced consonants. The activity is organised as a sequence of increasingly demanding game levels: learners start with an isolated sound, move to a simple word and then work towards more complex words and variations.

Before playing, learners can use visual guides and native-speaker video examples to see and hear the target. During practice, voice recognition provides immediate feedback on the spoken response. Cantonese romanisation, progress displays and gamified elements are designed to make practice more approachable while giving learners a record of what they have already worked through. The project focuses on manageable practice for primary learners, not on formal pronunciation assessment.

Evaluation focus

The report records user-acceptance testing with Primary 3โ€“6 pupils, who gave the app an overall 4/5 rating. It identifies broader sound coverage, dialogue practice and community features as future work.
